YES! Take it from me I moved to HI when I was 18 and stayed there until I was 25 years old. And, I moved to HI with $1500 in my pocket and was able to find a place to stay and got a job. It is expensive but you are off to a great start financially. The one thing I loved the most in hawaii was the laid back atmosphere. I think the pros outweight the cons. If I could survive on a $20k/year job in Honolulu and still have time to explore and have fun you definitely have a chance. I think a lot of a person’s experience is all dependent on the individual, but overall I think you will be ok.

If you have no debts, $20k is a good nest egg. It shows you have been able to earn and keep money, unless that was unearned.

Sounds like a plan. One thing I’d caution you about is being able to fish for food. That’s a time-consuming way to get meat, and it’s not guaranteed you’ll get something every time. I lived there all the years I was growing up, and it would have been inconceivable to rely on fishing for food, not if we expected to have any life otherwise.

Yes, 20,000 should be enough to keep you OK for about a year, expect to spend 1,000 a month JUST FOR THAT ROOM and be sure to have a return trip ticket JUST IN CASE! Have you been to the City Data Forum? it is and you will find so many answers to your questions! I’ve got the same plan as you, I just haven’t got my 20,000 saved up yet.
It’s a way different style of life, people there all have roommates, two jobs, etc., it is not an easy place to make it, but if the island doesn’t spit you back out it will be paradise.

Sounds like a plan. BUT, if you’ve never lived in Hawaii, be prepared to pay higher prices than other places, not lower. And I hope you’re good at fishing. Not that easy. And if you don’t make a catch? For three days in a row? But I just point these minor things out to you because I can understand how gung-ho you are on the plan. And like I said, it’s a good plan. Anyway, the $600 per month should take care of the rent, phone, util., etc. And if you do try to live frugally until you get things going, then I don’t think you’ll put too much of a dent in the $20,000. You’re right, Hawaii is pretty expensive! But it sounds like you already did your research, haha! When I visited Hawaii, I was surprised to see basic things like deodorant and razors were marked up $3 or $4. So I guess my advice would be to spend your money wisely and make things last, or stock up before you leave on basic things like that!
