Ben H asked:
I am moving to Hawaii in about a month and was wondering what company you use in Hawaii for home phone and Internet? Thanks!

Time Warner Cable
Mostly every local in Hawaii has this. Great service plus it does internet. Time Warner Cable is pretty much a local company.
Hope you like it here in Hawaii!

Our “land line” phone service in Hawaii is provided basically by one company, which is Hawaiian Telcom. Hawaiian Telcom also provides internet service through your telephone lines if you choose to subscribe to it. My advice, though, is to avoid Hawaiian Telcom like the plague. Their customer service is terrible, their billings are almost impossible to straighten out if and when they make mistakes (which they do), and there is simply no reason to put yourself through that stress these days when there are other alternatives.
I would choose to go through Oceanic Time Warner for my television/cable service (which you will definitely need in Hawaii unless you opt for a satellite dish), and then you can subscribe to “extra” add on services, such as your cable internet connection, and your digital “land line” telephone service, which also comes through your internet connection. The downside is your phone goes down if the cable connection goes down, but these days, that is not a huge problem since so many of us seem to use our cell phones as our primary phones these days, anyway. By the way, the first poster indicated Time Warner is pretty much a local company. This is incorrect. They are a huge, national, company, but their customer service is astoundingly good. Good luck, and welcome to Hawaii!

For the Internet, you should get Clearwire. It’s wireless so you don’t have to have them come and install it. You can get it at any Best Buy, and they give you the box to take with you right then and there. It works really well. All you have to do is plug it in, and you’re ready to go. The service is good, too.
For phone, it’s Hawaii Telcom. It’s THE phone service on the islands.
For Cable, It’s Oceanic Time Warner Cable.

Most use Hawaiian Telcom for home phone service. True, they had earlier (highly publicized) problems with customer service and billing, but that was due to a changeover after Verizon Hawaii was bought out. There should be problems no longer.
I use Oceanic Time Warner’s Road Runner for internet service.
I do not recommend Hawaiian Telcom’s internet service as it seems to “be down” very often. I also do not recommend getting Oceanic’s digital phone service, as it runs on electricity, which basically mean, if your electricity goes out, your phone service goes out as well (not good for emergencies).
