Do you ever have to heat your home in Hawaii?

jim asked:

Someone once told me that many homes don’t come with furnaces there.

No. But some houses come with fireplaces for some reason. It doesn’t get deathly cold here.

And it only snows on the Big Island, up in the mountains.

I don’t think any homes come with furnaces. At least I have never seen or heard of one. During the day it rarely goes below 70 & at night it rarely goes below 60, so there really isn’t much of a need. Sometimes it feels chilly enough to snuggle under a blanket, but I have rarely wished for a heater.

Where we were there on O’ahu we talked to several locals and they said it could get as cold as 50′s. Which to me living in the Midwest is not that cold. However when they are used to such nice weather 50′s is pretty cold!

    No furnaces
    No jackets
    No shoes

Bring a toothbrush and get your sunscreen here

I have never seen a furnace in any home or apartment in Hawaii, but yes, some do have fireplaces in such areas as upcountry Maui on the slopes of Haleakala, which can get quite chilly.

Right now I wish the other two people in my office (who are from Oregon/California) would turn the air conditioning off! I am freezing! It is a beautiful 75 degrees outside (7:45AM) with the balmy trade winds blowing and they have all the windows closed and the AC at 67 degrees….brrr for me.

Aloha and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I stayed with a cousin who had a winter place on Mona Kea. During the summer he lived in Alaska. One day while I was freezing my haoles off (because all I had was shorts and a t-shirt) he said, “The kids around here have nicer parkas than kids in Alaska.”

It snows in Hawaii, but I still don’t think many houses have any heat.

Depends on where in Hawaii and the time of year.

In the mountains (mauka), it can get cold year round, but cold like you imagine cold. Just cold compared to the almost constant, gentle 84 degrees one gets use to living there. The longer you live in Hawaii, the more you’ll be able to notice the increase or drop in temperature even if it’s only 2 degrees.

Snow doesn’t happen every year. It has occurred on two of the islands – Maui and Hawaii (the Big Island).

If you are visiting Hawaii during the winter, bring a light jacket and some slacks. If you’re visiting during the summer and plan on visiting Haleakala (on Maui) and/or Kilauea (on the Big Island), you might wan to do the same.

I don’t and none of my friends do either. I haven’t seen a home here in Hawaii that has heating OR A/C and most of the time, neither is needed. I find that I am “cold” when the temp gets below 70 degrees F, so I wear socks at night and pull a blanket over my legs when I’m watching TV. I have to admit that I have the windows open when that happens though! I love having the tradewinds blow through the house to keep things fresh. I guess if I closed all the windows and turned off the ceiling fans, I probably wouldn’t need socks or a blanket. ;)
