Can anyone from Hawaii tell me about Makakilo in Oahu?
HollyJ asked:
I am looking into relocating and saw that there are some new homes under construction. I would like more info on the area. Any info would be really be helpful.

Makakilo is now getting a lot of new homes i hear. But traffic could be your worst enemy but don’t worry im sure newer big roads will be developed over the years.
Hope you love it here in Hawaii

Makakilo is a nice community, built on a hillside in Leeward Oahu. You will have nice views & the weather will be a bit cooler, esp. at night. But as the other fellow indicated, commuting to Honolulu will be very difficult. If your job hours are different from the usual business day, or if you are working nearby, it would not be a bad place to live. But I’d be hard pressed to recommend it if you hold a 8 to 4 job in Honolulu.

Traffic out there is really bad because it’s over-developed on the west side of the island. If you plan on working Down Town, get ready for some heavy commuting every day.
The beaches on that side aren’t as nice as the rest of the island (in my opinion), however our beaches in Hawaii in general are nicer than anywhere else, so it doesn’t really matter.

Makakilo is a very nice area. As another poster mentioned, it is on the hillside overlooking Kapolei, and the weather out there is very cool at night. It is probably a 45 minute drive into downtown without traffic, so if you are commuting for work, you would probably have to leave by about 6:00 a.m. to get to work on time. It will be stop and go all the way. Leave 15 minutes earlier, and the traffic will be heavy (lots of cars on the road), but it will flow. The interesting thing about that area is that Honolulu has been trying to develop Kapolei as a “second city” on Oahu for a number of years, and they are finally making some headway and gaining momentum. There are a number of city and state buildings out there, and the Judiciary is placing all of Oahu’s Family Courts out there. These specific items may not have any direct effect on you or what you do, but they show that there is a lot going on in that area, and a specific governmental intent to continue to develop the Kapolei area as a fully contained city of its own. It is happening, and when it finally comes to full fruition, home prices in Makakilo will probably increase very significantly. Even though there are a lot of homes in Kapolei, Makakilo is better in my opinion, because it is higher in elevation and cooler.

I live near Makakilo. It’s a beautiful area, but traffic is KILLER.
